Why test urine or saliva pH?

Testing urine and saliva pH provides a simple way to monitor the acidity or alkalinity of these body fluids at home. pH can change throughout the day and may be influenced by factors such as diet, hydration, medication and your daily routine.

Regular testing can help you see how your readings change over time and identify patterns. This can be particularly useful when monitoring changes to your diet or lifestyle and seeing whether these changes coincide with changes in your urine or saliva pH.

Try and test under the same conditions each day, ie the first and second urine as well as the saliva first thing in the morning. Our SimplexHealth pH test strips contain a 30-day chart to record the readings so changes can be tracked.

These strips measure the pH of the urine or saliva sample being tested. They do not measure blood pH or the pH of your entire body, and they should not be used as a diagnostic test.

How to Use:

SALIVA: Wait 2 hours after eating & drinking or brushing teeth. Do not rinse your mouth. Spit saliva into a spoon, dip the SimplexHealth pH strip into the fluid for about 3 seconds until both pads on the test strip are sufficiently covered with liquid; wait 15 seconds before reading your pH. Discard the used pH test strip. Please note, that non-bubble saliva is best.

URINE: The first urine of the day is usually slightly more acidic than normal, therefore test the first & second urine of the day. Track both over time to observe changes. To test, briefly place the SimplexHealth pH strip in the urine – mid-stream, then shake off any excess fluid and wait 15 seconds to read your pH. Discard the used pH test strip.

For saliva as well as urine:

  • Wait 15 seconds before reading the results. The colour of the indicator pads may change further after that, but the most accurate reading is taken after 15 seconds (and no later).
  • Compare the colour of both pads against the indicator chart on the packaging.
  • Sometimes, the readings are influenced by other substances in the urine or saliva, such as medicine, neutral salt, protein, colloid, alkaloid, organic solvent (like alcohol). In this case, it is better to use the reading of the top pad only (the one furthest away from the handle). The upper pad is more stable at performance than the lower pad.

Understanding your pH results

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14. A reading below 7 is acidic, a reading of 7 is neutral, and a reading above 7 is alkaline.

When using these strips, the result represents the pH of the urine or saliva sample, not the pH of your entire body.

Saliva pH: Saliva is generally slightly acidic to near-neutral, although readings can change throughout the day and can be affected by food, drinks, oral conditions and other factors.

Urine pH: Urine can naturally range from acidic to alkaline and can vary considerably depending on factors such as diet, hydration, medication and the time of day. A single urine pH reading does not, by itself, indicate whether you are healthy or unhealthy.

For this reason, it can be more useful to record your readings over time and test under similar conditions when you want to compare results.

I have not received my order what do I do?

If you have not received your goods after 14 working days, then please contact us and we will chase your delivery. The quickest way is to contact the team by email (quoting your order number and contact details) or call us on +44 (0) 1933 664746 (Monday to Friday 9am – 5.00pm). It is out of our control if delivery gets delayed due to postal strikes or natural disasters, however we will do our best to help solve any problems with lost items.
